It also means finding the right software to process the files into a format suitable for prints, and uploading to the web. I&#8217;ve been using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phaseone.com\/4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Capture One 4<\/a> for over a year now, and been very happy with it.<\/p>\n<p>I made the following notes when I was evaluating RAW converters, looking specifically at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the level of detail extracted<\/li>\n<li>ability to assign comparative ratings<\/li>\n<li>customizable sharpening<\/li>\n<li>noise removal<\/li>\n<li>batch processing<\/li>\n<li>color rendition for my Canon 400D files (.CR2)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/photoshop\/cameraraw.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Adobe Camera Raw<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Pluses<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>great workflow with Bridge<\/li>\n<li>excellent viewing and editing performance<\/li>\n<li>sidecar files (ie. the ability to save your edits in a file external to the RAW file)<\/li>\n<li>DNG format support (a standard for RAW files that is gaining wider support)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Minuses<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>doesn&#8217;t display red correctly for CR2 files, even worse when it&#8217;s converted to DNG<\/li>\n<li>conversion is slow<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more-->&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/photoshoplightroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Adobe LightRoom<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Pluses<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>extremely slick, impressive interface<\/li>\n<li>sidecar files<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Minuses<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>has the same color problems with my Canon files as ACR<\/li>\n<li>slow<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bibblelabs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bibble Pro<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Pluses<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a one-stop shop with lots of control, meaning you may not need to go to Photoshop for most shots<\/li>\n<li>sidecar files<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Minuses<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>more resource hungry than ACR, meaning I can&#8217;t use it on my Dell X1 laptop (with its measly 512MB RAM)<\/li>\n<li>not as detailed image as C1 or ACR\/Lightroom<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.phaseone.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Capture One<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Pluses<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>excellent colors and detail from my 400D files<\/li>\n<li>best sharpening algorithms to my eye<\/li>\n<li>lowest resource usage, making it possible to run on my Dell X1<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Minuses<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>have to manually export (archive) its own side car files<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.isl.co.jp\/SILKYPIX\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Silkypix<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Pluses<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>best colors of the lot, even better than C1<\/li>\n<li>sidecar files automatically saved<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Minuses<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>sharpening not as good as C1, but on par with others<\/li>\n<li>more resource hungry than C1, but less so than the others<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iridientdigital.com\/products\/rawdeveloper.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Raw Developer<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Pluses<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>more detail than C1, good colors too (see outback photo&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.outbackphoto.com\/artofraw\/raw_28\/essay.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>sidecar files<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Minuses<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>only for the Mac<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lightcrafts.com\/products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LightZone<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Pluses<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>unique zone mapping feature (a la Ansel Adams), Photoshop not needed for most applications<\/li>\n<li>sidecar files<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Minuses<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>still an early edition<\/li>\n<li>runs on Java, which means slow and occasional crashes on my laptop<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.breezesys.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Breeze Browser<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Pluses<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>writes sidecar files<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Minuses<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>not as full-featured as the others, will need to go to photoshop<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shooting RAW offers many advantages over using your camera&#8217;s JPEG processing, including the ability to increase the dynamic range of the original photo.
